With June being recognized as Men’s Health Month, we are presented with the perfect opportunity to talk about prostate health with James Piephoff, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist. Prostate cancer strikes one of six American males. It’s the second most common cancer after skin cancer. As cancers go, prostate cancer is not the most deadly. In fact, 99 percent of patients are alive 10 years after diagnosis; nevertheless, cancer should never be taken lightly. The prostate is a gland about the size and shape of a walnut that produces part of the fluid that makes up semen and acts to propel semen through the urethra during ejaculation. It’s located just below the bladder and can be easily reached through the rectum.

The digital rectal examination (DRE), a routine part of a male’s physical examination after age 50, is one way of checking for abnormalities that could signal cancer. Digital rectal examinations are likely to miss early cancers, however, and the most effective screening tool today is a combination of DRE and the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Doctors don’t know what causes prostate cancer, but the incidence of microscopic prostate cancer is apparently widespread and similar in most countries of the world. The death rates vary widely, however, not only from one country to another but between different regions of the United States.

One factor that may affect the growth of prostate cancer is sunlight. Studies have generally found that men least likely to die of prostate cancer are those with fair skin living in a sunny climate. Mortality rates among white males, for example, are much lower in the sunny Southwest than in the overcast northeastern states. African-Americans, who absorb less vitamin D through their skin, have a significantly higher rate of advanced prostate cancer, and Jamaicans have the highest mortality rate in the world. Sunlight is a major source of vitamin D, and one laboratory study found that high concentrations of vitamin D alter the makeup of prostate cancer cells so they are less likely to spread. ;)

Prostate cancer risk is 70 percent higher in men who consume large quantities of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in meat, vegetable oils and other foods. Another type of omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, however, apparently has a beneficial effect. Among 47,000 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, those who reported eating fish more than three times a week had a 44 percent lower risk of advanced prostate cancer over a 12-year period. Fish oil supplements, according to this study, had no such positive effect. Lycopene, abundant in cooked tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is an antioxidant that has gained attention recently. One study found that older men with higher blood levels of lycopene had a 50 percent reduced risk of prostate cancer; another study found that men who ate two or more servings of tomato sauce a week had a 35 percent reduced risk of metastatic prostate cancer over a 12-year period. :)

I heard about Beta-sitosterol. This prostate remedy is a mixture taken from different plants that contain cholesterol-like substances called sitosterols. Several studies have found that beta-sitosterol can relieve urinary symptoms of BPH, including the strength of urine flow. There haven’t been any major side effects reported with the use of beta-sitosterol, although doctors still don’t know all the long-term effects of this natural remedy.

Select a pumpkin, a medium size, select all seeds (with pulp). You need to scroll them through a meat grinder, add half a Cup of honey, stir, roll balls of small size, to take over forty minutes before eating one on an empty stomach. Water to drink is not necessary, it is better to hold useful "candy", candy in the mouth until it dissolves. The remaining balls need to put it in the refrigerator to take until the end. Then you should take a break for a week and again repeat the course.Inhale as deeply as possible, inflate the stomach. Ten or twelve seconds, hold your breath. Then exhale belly; try to keep your stomach completely disappeared, as if stuck to the spine. Repeat three or seven times or three times a day. If possible draw the anus stronger for eight to ten seconds. Repeat three times for one approach, during the day several times

A range of treatments can relieve enlarged prostate symptoms -- medications, minimally-invasive office procedures, and surgery. The best one for you depends on your symptoms, how severe they are, and whether you have other medical conditions. The size of your prostate gland, your age, and your overall health will also factor into treatment decisions. What's best for a man in his 50s might not be optimal for an 80-year-old. An older man may want immediate symptom relief through drugs or surgery, whereas a younger man may lean toward a minimally invasive treatment. According to the American Urological Association, surgery often does the best job of relieving symptoms, but it also has more risks than other treatments.

There are also natural remedies that work to combat prostate growth. However, the evidence is debatable on whether these treatments work. The American Urological Association currently does not recommend any herbal therapy for managing BPH. If you do want to try any of these natural remedies, talk to your doctor first. It helped me a lot.Stinging Nettle You’ll know if you’ve accidently touched the common European stinging nettle, as hairs on its leaves can cause a sharp jolt of intense pain. But stinging nettle can have some benefits when used as a medicine. Eating one type of food or another probably won’t prevent BPH or relieve its symptoms, but a healthy diet can help. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming vegetables that are high in vitamin C and zinc are best for preventing BPH and relieving its symptoms. Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may help too.
